A world held together by thorns, marrow, and bone. For generations, the realm of House Valgard has secured its border through an unspeakable tribute: delivering a royal maiden into the bleeding ironwood of the Blackwood, where the savage Wolf-King awaits his bride. When the cruel lottery falls upon her frail younger sister Charlotte, Princess Mara Valgard refuses to let the innocent perish. Cloaked in a burial shroud of white samite and crypt-soil, Mara takes her sister's place. But she does not enter the haunted timberland as a docile victim. Hidden tight against her ribs rests a silver blade gifted by her father, King Henry-an assassin's cold instrument forged to spill the monster's blood.Yet within the shifting, non-Euclidean halls of the Citadel of Thorns, the fairy tale crumbles into gothic horror.Lord Fenwick is not a bloodthirsty beast, but House Valgard's founding monarch, cursed by ancient hubris to endure an agonizing, immortal penance. The eight brides who vanished before Mara were never butchered; their living flesh was grafted into the fortress's subterranean taproots to form a biological barrier holding back a Primordial Frost God slumbering in the abyss. Fenwick spends his centuries slicing his own veins into the earth, suffering horrific torment to keep the world from freezing solid. When living sap touches Mara's dagger, the sickening truth uncoils: the blade was never meant to save her. It is an arcane detonator tuned to Fenwick's bloodline, designed to break the living cage and harvest the god's cosmic winter as a siege engine for her empire. Before Mara can flee the realization of her father's betrayal, war arrives at the gates. Striking from the south is an inquisitorial vanguard flying the royal crest, armed with frost-wrought artillery. Leading the massacre is not the king, but Charlotte herself-healthy, clad in frost-etched armor, and having faked a decade of sickness to send Mara into the woods as an unwitting bomb. With the ancient wardens butchered, the taproots splitting, and Fenwick pinned to the heartwood by a god-heart lance, Mara faces a brutal reckoning. Mortal steel cannot mend a broken cage. To avenge the sisterhood of the roots and keep the subterranean frost from swallowing the world, Mara must commit the ultimate transgression: shatter her human vows, consume the wolf's sacred marrow, and unleash an apex metamorphosis that will forever sever her from the world of men.Wolves Sleeping Beneath the Bridal Bed is a dark, visceral tour de force of gothic folklore and body-horror fantasy. Written with claustrophobic sensory detail and devastating twists, this subversive fairy tale is essential reading for fans of Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber, Naomi Novik, and Ava Reid. Step into the briars, breathe the scent of frozen iron, and discover what truly sleeps beneath the bridal bed.
