8vo; xvi, 572 pages, green cloth, variant thickness ca. 3mm., inked name on endpaper. An epic historical novel of the life of Joseph Bailly and his family. " If some of the episodes seem overdramatic, . The author has, if anything, underdrawn the amazing happenings in the Old Northwest. In addition to being a story of adventure, a record of people and events of the early nineteenth century from Canada to the Gulf, and especially in the Middle Western portion of the Great Lakes region . and a record of the passing of the Indian life and the french life and of the coming of the Anglo-Saxon frontiersman, the book also becomes a record of the vanishing wilderness of the Calumet marshes and the Indiana and Michigan dune country - Preface." Partially set in Frenchtown, L'Arbre Croche, and Detroit, and on Mackinac Island - MICHIGAN IN THE NOVEL, 16." It was a beautiful world - edged with danger, like a sword shining and sharp. . Always, as her parents said so often, there seemed to be wolves against the moon! " - p.536.

Mr. Joyce was a founding partner of the former Chicago Rare Book Center, of Chicago and Evanston, Illinois. Proprietor Tom Joyce appeared regularly as the book appraiser on "The Appraisal Fair", seen on Home And Garden Television, HGTV. These topics are reflected in our inventory, and much more, including Sherlockiana. In addition to regional institutions nearby Chicago and Illinois, we have been able to place rare materials with the American Antiquarian Society, The Library of Congress, The Bodleian Library, Harvard and Yale Universities, the Presidential Libraries of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, et cetera.
