A World War II historical military romance set on the Eastern Front, where Soviet women fighter pilots and Red Army tank crews fight, bleed, and fall in love under fire.
Ukraine, 1943.
Olga Zhuravets is a Yak-9 pilot in the 194th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, one of the Soviet women the Germans have begun to fear as the Red Witches. She flies low over guns, trucks, rail lines, and retreating columns, clearing the way for the Red Army’s advance. In the air, hesitation kills. So does caring too much.
Lieutenant Mikhail Buzulukov, known to his tank platoon as Volk, commands a battered T-34 crew pushing west through mud, mines, artillery, and German counterattacks. His men trust him because he does not spend their lives carelessly. Every road he takes has a gun waiting for it. Every village costs more than the map admits.
Olga belongs to the sky.
Mikhail belongs to the ground.
War gives them no clean separation.
Her fighter clears the road his tanks must take. His platoon marks the targets her regiment must destroy. Across radio calls, maps, field strips, smoke, and brief moments stolen between missions, they become part of the same battle system — Yak fighter above, T-34 platoon below.
But love in war is not safe. It sharpens judgment and threatens it at the same time.
As the Red Army drives the Germans west, Olga and Mikhail are pulled deeper into a campaign of close air support, armored assaults, Luftwaffe attacks, ruined villages, field repairs, and impossible choices. Each mission asks the same question:
What does care become when the price of care is bad judgment?
Written for readers of World War II historical fiction, Eastern Front fiction, military fiction, wartime romance, and stories about Soviet women pilots, Witches of the Red Sky blends the siege-pressure intensity of Enemy at the Gates with the operational war-machine scale of Red Army.
This is not a soft love story set beside the war.
It is a love story built inside it.
