About the Author: Stephen Calloway is Associate Curator of paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He travels all over the world lecturing on the 1890s. He is a world expert on the art of Aubrey Beardsley and is the Curator of a major exhibition to be staged at the V&A on the work of Beardsley in 1998. Most recently he was consultant on the film The Portrait of a Lady directed by Jane Campion and starring Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich. David Colvin is a man of many talents all of which he employs to the full. He lectures in the history of art; designs books for his own press, Cypher; designs costumes for the Mermaid Theatre and National Theatre; contributes photographs to the Architectual Association library and writes, mainly on the literary characters of the 19th century.
