From the Publisher
The experiences of a Methodist circuit rider in 19th-century Indiana is explored in the Indiana Historical Society book Window to a Changed World: The Personal Memoirs of William Graham.
Edited by Donald L. Parman, Purdue University professor of history, the book is the autobiography of William Graham, born in York, Pennsylvania, who served as a Methodist minister from 1844 to his full retirement in 1894. Although Graham spent the bulk of his ministry in Indiana, he also worked as an apprentice house carpenter, was a Methodist circuit rider in western Arkansas and served two years as a missionary/teacher among the Choctaws in Indiana Territory.
Graham moved to Indiana in 1847 and spent the remainder of his career in the state. He served numerous churches, including those in LaPorte, Lafayette, Indianapolis, Crawfordsville, Terre Haute and Valparaiso.
One of the most important contributions of Graham's autobiography, notes Parman, is the insight that it conveys about the major changes taking place in the United States during the 19th century. Graham also witnessed major changes in communication, lived through the slavery controversy and the Civil War and saw the Grand Prairie of northern Indiana progress from sparsely inhabited public domain in the 1840s to one of the richest agricultural areas of the United States by the 1880s.
Parman, who joined the Purdue University faculty in 1966, received his undergraduate degree from Central Missouri State College, his master's degree from Ohio University and his doctorate from the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the IHS, Tippecanoe County Historical Association, Western History Association and the Indiana Association of Historians. Parman's previous works have included Indians and the American West in the Twentieth Century, published by Indiana University Press in 1994, and The Navajos and the New Deal, released by Yale University Press in 1976.
