Being able to do well in each ‘mini outcome’ – we’ll call it a ‘hand’ from now on – is the key to success in poker and recognising where & when your best chances are in winning hands you get involved with will serve you well in each and every game you play.
This guide will hopefully help you on your way to playing the game you now see on TV almost every day, on some TV channel or other. The game is Texas Hold’Em poker.
The simplicity of the game hides the true thought process that players go through in determining strategy not only in when to bet but when to bluff and when to fold. Mastering these thought processes are what determine the great players from the ‘fish’ and the rich from the poor.
Whilst the outcome of any hand you participate in can never be guaranteed, until the last card has fallen, this guide will point you in the right direction as regards WHEN to play and HOW to play. This guide relates best to NO LIMIT HOLD’EM although the concepts also apply equally to LIMIT HOLD’EM & POT LIMIT HOLD’EM as well.
You’ll find many variations of the game dependant on where you live in the world. LIMIT HOLD’EM is prevalent in the USA & CANADA whereas POT LIMIT HOLD’EM is more often played throughout Europe.
Card room tournaments are more and more becoming of the NO LIMIT variety no matter where you play.
Like a lot of things, poker—and Texas Hold ‘Em specifically—has its own language, so while you’re reading up on general info as well as strategies, we’ve included glossary definitions of key terms at the bottom of each page where they’re needed.
And you may be asking yourself: ‘How can I ACTUALLY learn how to win at this master’s game, from a 64-page booklet? Most poker books are at least 2-3 times longer and there seems to be so much to learn....’
Well, the answer is that there is a lot to learn, but most of that bounty of wisdom comes from understanding the basic odds at play and filtering this through experience of playing with others. That’s all.
To that end, there are parts of this book you should study repeatedly; the more you play, the more deeply everything will sink in and the more you’ll benefit from repeatedly studying what’s in this book.
Playing cards is a social activity where, like every social activity, protocol in the ways of the game and the people around you are learnt fairly quickly. Playing on the Internet is a great place to ‘learn’ the game itself which then leaves you with just the ‘real-life procedures’ to learn when you finally walk into a card room for the fist time.
By the time you’ve read what follows you’ll have a far better understanding of the game than 40% of the other players at the table you’re on. And that my friend you can take to the bank!
