William Ince was the partner of John Mayhew in the important eighteenth century cabinet-making firm Ince & Mayhew. Their furniture, which is on display in a number of museums around the world, features superb marquetry and a high standard of workmanship.

This book examines the life of William Ince, including the acrimonious law suit that followed the ending of the partnership. It also examines the influences on his life by looking at his ancestors to see where his talent was derived.

Much more than a family history, the book also looks at topics such as the impact of the English Civil War on a village in Worcestershire, life in Georgian London and the importance of the women in the Ince family.

The book is beautifully illustrated with drawings and water-colours, as well as photographs, maps and diagrams.

"In this fascinating and painstakingly researched study of the Ince family, Sarah Ingle, herself of this family, vividly brings to life a quintessential English story." Sir Hugh Roberts, Surveyor Emeritus of The Queen's Works of Art and expert on Ince & Mayhew furniture.

Sarah Ingle is the great great great great grand-daughter of William Ince and has been researching her family history for a number of years. She thoroughly enjoyed the detective work involved in tracing William’s lineage. The illustrators are also his direct descendants.
