Synopsis:

Journey back to another century and visit the untamed American West -- the land of the Gold Rush and home to many Native American tribes. See what life was like in a covered wagon, in a frontier town, or on a cattle ranch. Confront dangerous outlaws and the hardships of living in an unsettled land. Plenty of realistic illustrations, as well as period photographs and paintings, dramatize the gritty truths of the mythic Wild West. A splendid gift for any child fascinated by the stories and legends of this period. Includes a biographical section, a glossary, and an index.

From the Author: The Old West as it really was!
In writing this book, primarily aimed at and age group of 8-12 years, I have tried to dispell the great Hollywood misconceptions of the time period. In doing so, I learned a great deal about this seemingly timeless
era that has brought so much joy to todays' readers. Although it is aimed at the juvenille market the care and accuracy of information and artwork qualifies it for good adult reading as well

It differs from the DK books in many ways. There is enough information, technical and legendary details to whett the appetite of most ardent fans of the Old West as well as the browser. It may be of interest to let the readers know that I am English. The consultant, Dee Brown was kind enough to say that, "It should appeal to not only to young people but to all adults who are involved in the Old West - teachers of history, writers for print and film, will find it invaulable."

Not bad for a gringo, eh?
