Ever Wondered Why We Say “Burn the Midnight Oil,” “Straight from the Horse’s Mouth,” or “Pull the Wool Over Someone’s Eyes”?
You probably use expressions like these every single day without thinking twice, but have you ever stopped to wonder where they actually come from?
Why do we say someone is “under the weather” when they feel sick? What does it mean to “face the music” when you accept consequences? Why do we say “once in a blue moon” when something is rare? And what does it really mean to “cost an arm and a leg”?
Like most people, you probably use phrases like these all the time without a second thought. But once you stop and look a little closer, you’ll uncover something far more interesting.
These everyday expressions are not random. They are packed with stories shaped by history, culture, and real human experiences that go back centuries. From naval life and ancient calendars to theatres, marketplaces, and everyday life, the English language is full of hidden meanings just waiting to be uncovered.
In Why Do We Say That? we’ve carefully selected another collection of commonly used idioms, phrases, and sayings and broken them down in a way that is simple, engaging, and genuinely fascinating. For each one, you’ll discover where it came from, how it evolved, and why we still use it today.
Inside you will discover:
- Why sailors feeling seasick helped shape the phrase “under the weather”
- How military punishment gave us the expression “face the music”
- The rare astronomical event behind the phrase “once in a blue moon”
- Why priceless artwork may be the reason something “costs an arm and a leg”
- How everyday life and survival shaped expressions we still use today
And many more surprising stories behind the phrases you use every day.
Whether you’re looking to expand your vocabulary, sound more natural in conversation, or simply enjoy fascinating bits of history, this book gives you plenty of food for thought and insights you will actually remember.
You’ll start noticing these expressions everywhere. And once you understand where they come from, you’ll never hear them the same way again.
So don’t miss the boat. Click the Buy Now button and start uncovering the hidden history behind everyday language.
