This book examines the military, economic, and political causes of Germany's defeat in the war against the Soviet Union. The focus is not on individual myths or simple explanations, but on the interplay of strategy, logistics, industrial resources, political decisions and the increasing strength of the Red Army.
From the planning of Operation Barbarossa to the battles for Moscow and Stalingrad to Kursk, Operation Bagration and the Soviet advance into Germany, it shows why the originally planned rapid campaign turned into a long war of attrition. It explains the role played by the long German supply routes, the lack of fuel, the Soviet industrial relocation, the economic opportunities of both sides and the support of the Soviet Union by the Western Allies.
The book also explores the question of how much the National Socialist occupation and extermination policy weakened the German strategy itself. Millions of people in the occupied territories had some reasons to reject Stalinist rule. But German politics treated large parts of the population not as possible allies, but as subjects of a racist system of rule. Ideology and military strategy were therefore more closely linked than appears in many simplified accounts.
Even well-known explanations are critically classified. Was the Russian winter really decisive? Would the capture of Moscow in 1941 have ended the war? Was Stalingrad the real turning point? Did Hitler lose the war against the advice of his generals? And could the Soviet Union have won at all without Western help?
It becomes clear that there is no simple answer to any of these questions. For years, the Wehrmacht remained a dangerous and often tactically superior opponent. At the same time, the Red Army learned from its catastrophic defeats of 1941, improved its leadership, concentrated artillery and tanks more and more effectively, and eventually developed itself into a force capable of conducting large-scale mobile operations.
Why Germany lost the war against the Soviet Union is aimed at history buffs who want to get a comprehensible and at the same time well-founded overview of one of the decisive theaters of war of the Second World War. The book does not require any historical expertise and is not intended as a special scientific study for historians. Military contexts, economic backgrounds and political decisions are explained in an understandable way and placed in a larger context.
A book about the limits of military superiority, about the importance of industry and logistics, about political mistakes and about an opponent whose resilience Germany decisively underestimated.
Parts of the text have been revised with the support of artificial intelligence. It was used as a tool in structuring, research and linguistic elaboration. The contents have been carefully edited, historically classified and checked for factual consistency. In this way, the book combines modern working methods with the claim to offer a serious, understandable and high-quality presentation.
