Item description from seller

Den Haag : Van Goor, 1962. Hardcover. Dustjacket. 256 pp. 120 b/w illustrations ; 26 cm. Dustjacket sl. chipped. - This catalogue is being published on 'the very last moment'. The possessors of the Netherlands' large trousseaus of twenty five years ago are slowly dying out. Do their heirs know what they will find in the huge cupboards which for long years have been opened only to be aired and cleaned? Probably not. The new owners are likely to give more attention to the normal household linen, for every day use than to the tablecloths and napkins which are of little use as they stand. What will be their fate? Napkins can be used up as ordinary household linen, tablecloths can be cut to a more suitable size. Perhaps that the heirs may try to sell the sets, but buyers are difficult to be found. Linen appears seldom at auctions. So the number of patterns of which the present owner is unknown must be rapidly increas- ing. A catologue such as this could hardly be begun to day. But there must still be big trousseaus in Belgium, in France, in Great Britain, which the author has not seen and which hide among their treasures patterns so far unknown. Every object of historical value which has come down to us is worthy of preservation. That is why we have our musea and our private collections. Our advanced technique of electric lighting makes it possible to give a good impression of the beauty of this apparently unspectacular material. May this catalogue contribute to the preserva- tion of our inheritance. Condition : very good copy. Keywords : DECORATIVE ART.…
