214pp. Burgundy cloth-covered boards; gilt titles on spine; top text block edge sprayed yellow, illustrated endpapers. 8vo. Lightly rubbed spine ends, bottom front corner very lightly bumped. Text block edges tanning. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper, pages just starting to age. Otherwise internally neat, clean and tight. Dust jacket protected with Brodart-style sleeve, has very light shelf wear, not price clipped. Account of the dispute between the Rev Robert Whiston, the schoolmaster, and the Dean and Chapter of Rochester Cathedral in the mid 19th century. Whiston is said to have been the inspiration between Anthony Trollope's The Warden, and also inspirational to Charles Dickens, who had strong connections with Rochester.
