Synopsis:

This new study focuses on a little-documented period of Whistler's career: his stay in Venice from 1879 to 1880. Arriving in the footsteps of such renowned artists as Canaletto, Guardi, and Turner, whose enthusiasm for representing the city was shared by so many Grand Tourists, Whistler was determined to do more than simply capture its popular views. He wanted to penetrate further - to achieve a greater understanding of the nature of Venice itself.

About the Author: Eric Denker is Curator of Prints and Drawings at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C.

Mint with mint dustwrapper, fully illustrated. In 1879, artist James McNeill Whistler spent a year and a half in Venice after becoming bankrupt in London. He was there to create 12 commissioned etchings but stayed longer, producing around 50 etchings, 100 pastels, and a few oils, which revitalized his career. Whistler's Venetian works, like his etchings of quiet canals and atmospheric nocturnes, explored the city's less-traditional scenes and helped him reestablish his reputation. Seller Inventory # 687
