The beloved children's tale of Max & his adventures, winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year. This is an early printing (no LOC code, but pre-ISBN, so c. 1963-1971) with the Second State DJ (codes clipped from bottom front flap, SBN intact at top of same with $4.95 price & "Ages 4-8"; Caldecott mention on back flap & sticker to front). Oblong hardcover book has decorative paper-over boards with illustration that matches the accompanying DJ, gray quarter cloth-wrapped spine. Condition is VG+: extremely clean & bright, binding strong & straight, pages white & completely unmarked. Very mild corner bumping & rubbing to extremities. The bottom-clipped DJ is Good+/VG-, with light soil, rubbing to extremities, big black smudge to back cover & 2 small (1/2") vertical tears descending from top edge of front cover.
