Advance Praise for When You Are Not in the Room

“Javier manages to ground the intangible nature of leadership in concrete practices that transform teams, cultures, and—above all—conscience.”
—Juliana Angarita Saldarriaga, CHRO Executive Coach, Inner Leadership Embodiment Advocate

“ What I value most is the way he combines intentionality with method: it’s not just about good intentions, but about leading with clarity, structure, and purpose.”
—Héctor Orellana Brun, VP North Latam

“It’s not about flashy leadership or performative charisma—it’s about what truly lasts: the systems, values, and culture leaders build. This book is a gift for anyone who cares about leading with integrity and leaving behind something meaningful.”
—Kate Etinger, Chief People Officer

Leadership is talked about endlessly—and understood rarely.

Across organizations, leaders are told to deliver results, engage people, model values, drive change… yet few agree on what leadership really is. The expectations conflict. The noise is constant. And without clarity, even the most capable leaders get stuck—reacting, performing, coping.

When You Are Not in the Room cuts through the noise with one urgent question: What are you really building?

Drawing on over two decades advising senior leaders and executive teams across industries and cultures, Javier Castillo Gil reframes leadership not as a role to play, but as a practice to master. The framework shared in this book is grounded in real-world leadership — shaped by firsthand experience, high-stakes decision-making, and the nuanced challenges of organizational life.

Whether you're a new manager or a seasoned executive, this book offers insight, reflection, and a framework to ensure your leadership outlives you—for the right reasons.

It is the first volume in The Leadership Legacy Series, a trilogy focused on leadership that endures. The second volume—focused on leadership teams—is scheduled for release in January 2026, followed by the third volume—on organizational fluidity and execution—in the third quarter of 2026.

In this book, the spotlight is on the individual: how leaders create clarity, reinforce culture, and drive value through everyday choices—not grand gestures. This is not a book about charisma or quick wins. It’s a guide for those who want to lead with intention, operate with integrity, and build something that endures—something that speaks for itself, even in their absence.

Paperback is also available at a special early-reader price for a limited time. This launch edition invites those ready to lead with intention to join the conversation early—before the book returns to its full list price.
