What if your parachute fails and you survive?
Not the literal one. The future you imagined. The relationship. The career. The identity that no longer fits the person you're becoming.
Lana Starchuck is a five-time record-holding skydiver with over 1,100 jumps who has lived through job loss, divorce(s), hitting a moose, and a parachute malfunction at 3,500 feet. Each time, she found the same truth: the moment when everything felt uncertain was not the end of the story. It was the beginning of a different one.
When Your Parachute Fails and Other Success Stories is for anyone on the verge of change and looking to act with intention.
With humour and honesty, Lana uses her J.U.M.P. framework: Just notice your fear; Understand the risk; Make a decision; Proceed with trust, to show that uncertainty isn't something to avoid. It's where to pay attention.
You’re more ready than you feel. You always have been.
Will you J.U.M.P.?
Early praise for When Your Parachute Fails
“Most people wait for courage to show up before they act. Lana shows how to move forward when we’re still afraid. Her stories are funny and vulnerable, and you don’t have to be a skydiver to recognize yourself in this book.”
— Sam Demma, speaker and author of Empty Your Backpack
“Lana’s book is a rare blend of honesty, humour, and hard‑earned wisdom. In a time when authenticity is elusive, her stories and reflective questions offer real guidance for anyone wrestling with change, doubt, or perceived failure. She may call herself “someone who knows about failing,” but what she shares here proves she’s learned how to fall with courage - and rise with insight. Readers facing their own challenges will find encouragement, clarity, and practical wisdom they can apply to their own lives.”
— Carl Oxholm, FCPA, FCA, COC, founder, author of The Biology of Leadership
“I love the way Lana writes. She's funny, refreshingly honest, and unapologetically herself. Her stories pull you in, but it's their lasting impact that makes this book special. Few books have made me stop, reflect, and actually make changes in my life. This one did”
–Sami Jo Small, Three-time Olympic medalist, keynote speaker, and author of The Role I Played
“You can learn a lot jumping out of a plane and having things go sideways, but a far smarter way to obtain that wisdom is to let Lana go through that terrifying experience and find out what she learned from it. In that sense, reading this book may well save your life.”
— Dan Riskin, scientist, science journalist, and author
“When your parachute fails, you need a reserve. Lana’s book is it! In a world that feels like it’s in freefall, it gives you courage to jump, confidence in the dive, and lift to land on your feet.”
— Nancy Regan, TV broadcaster, speaker, coach, and national bestselling author of From Showing Off to Showing Up
“Lana's stories capture the heart of our sport: grit, humility, perseverance, and what it takes to keep showing up in the sky and in life.”
— Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld, world-champion formation skydiver, drop zone manager and author of Above All Else: A World Champion Skydiver's Story of Survival and What It Taught Him About Fear, Adversity, and Success
"A powerful blend of real-world experience, raw honesty, and contagious positive energy. Lana is the real deal."
- Eric Janssen, Ive Business School
