And why is this experience so widely misunderstood? When the Mind Goes Small is the first comprehensive, evidence-based guide to understanding age regression as an adaptive stress regulation strategy. Written for people who experience regression, their supporters, and mental health professionals, this book replaces stigma with science and judgment with practical frameworks. What You'll Learn: - The neuroscience behind why childhood-coded comfort objects remain effective across the lifespan- How classical and operant conditioning create associations your nervous system recognizes decades later- Why stress narrows cognitive capacity and pulls you toward simpler, younger-feeling states- The difference between voluntary small-state (planned, restorative) and involuntary regression (overwhelm-driven)- When childhood-coded tools help versus harm, and how to prevent avoidance patterns- Practical protocols for oral comfort, soft anchors, bedtime rituals, and low-demand activities- Public-friendly stand-ins and containment strategies for school, work, and social settings- How to build sustainable routines with clear entry, exit, and aftercare plans- Evidence-based support guidance for parents, partners, therapists, teachers, and friendsWho This Book Is For: - Teens and adults who experience age regression, whether voluntary or involuntary- People who use childhood-coded comfort tools and want to understand why they help- Parents of teens or adult children who regress and need accurate information- Partners and friends seeking to support without pathologizing- Mental health professionals looking for evidence-based frameworks- Educators who work with students who occasionally present as younger than their chronological ageThe Science-Over-Stigma Approach: This book does not pathologize age regression. It offers a clear-eyed look at how the nervous system learns comfort, why early associations remain powerful, and how to use that knowledge intentionally. Research-backed explanations sit alongside practical protocols, safety considerations, and dignity-preserving language. What Makes This Book Different: - First comprehensive book to treat age regression as legitimate stress regulation- Integrates neuroscience, conditioning theory, attachment research, and sensory processing- Practical worksheets and safety protocols in every practical chapter- Addresses both voluntary use and involuntary regression- Public-friendly micro-tools for contexts where full props aren't accessible- Accessible language without sacrificing scientific accuracy- Six dedicated support chapters-practical guidance without condescensionIf you've ever felt too big for your body during stress, or too small for the world's expectations-if you've hidden comfort practices out of shame-this book is for you.
