About the Author: Although he was first and foremost a preacher, (ordained in 1838) Horatius Bonar is perhaps best remembered as “the prince of Scottish hymn writers,” who wrote over 600 hymns. He was born into a long line of ministers. The son of James Bonar, Horatius was one of eleven children. Two of his brothers were also ministers. One of his first duties in this capacity was a labor in home missions at St. John’s parish in Leith. He also pastored in Kelso. In 1867, he moved to the Chalmers Memorial Church in Edinburgh. Horatius Bonar married Jane Catherine Lundie in 1843, and they had five children that died at a young age, which naturally caused them much sorrow. Other children lived to adulthood. Bonar was a capacious and exceedingly popular author. In addition to writing and preaching, he was the editor for a number of journals in his lifetime. He wrote numerous books, gospel tracts, and hymns. Perhaps his best known hymn was, “I heard the voice of Jesus Say.” It is interesting to note that a song by Joan Baez and Bill Wood, “So Soon in the Morning,” contains two lines from “I heard the voice of Jesus say.” Another widely known Bonar hymn is “Blessing and Honour and Glory and Power.” He wrote poetry, inspirational book, of which this is one of many, and biographies of ministers that he had known in his lifetime. Bonar earned the Doctor of Divinity degree at the University of Aberdeen in 1853. In 1883, he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland. Horatius Bonar had a zealous heart for revival and was a potent soul-winner. He was a colleague and backer of several revivalists, one of whom was D. L. Moody. He was closely involved with the work of William C. Burns and Robert Murray M’Cheyne. (1813-1843) In 1883, he was appointed moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. By 1887, his health had begun to decline. He was almost eighty when he preached in his church for the last time. He died on 31 May 1889.
