A groundbreaking account of Ancient Egyptian culture and history that set the standard for the field
When Egypt Ruled the West was originally published in 1942, and it immediately became the standard account of the history and culture of Ancient Egypt. Drawing on then-new archaeological evidence, George Steindorff told the fascinating story of a splendid culture that flourished thirty-five hundred years ago in the empire on the Nile: Kings and conquests, gods and heroes, beautiful art, sculpture, poetry, architecture, and more. Richly illustrated and written to be accessible to ordinary readers who want to learn more about Ancient Egypt, the book was revised and updated in 1957 by Keith C. Steele to take account of new discoveries and interpretations. Decades later, When Egypt Ruled the West remains a foundational work of the study of the region, its people, and its culture.
