When Asia Welcomed the World: The 2002 World Cup Revisited tells the story of one of football's most dramatic, colourful and controversial tournaments. Hosted by South Korea and Japan, the first FIFA World Cup staged in Asia delivered breathtaking upsets, unforgettable performances and debates that continue to divide football supporters more than two decades later.
From sports journalist Danny Lewis comes a vivid retelling of a tournament packed with compelling stories. Ronaldo completed one of football's greatest comebacks to lead Brazil to a record fifth World Cup alongside Rivaldo and Ronaldinho, while Oliver Kahn's outstanding performances helped carry Germany to an unexpected final and Turkey captured imaginations with a remarkable run to third place. Senegal stunned defending champions France on their way to the quarter-finals, while Argentina, France and Portugal suffered shocking group-stage exits. The book also revisits Roy Keane's dramatic departure from the Republic of Ireland camp, Zlatko Zahovič's explosive fallout with Slovenia and the controversy surrounding South Korea's run to the semi-finals.
