"There are five mistakes in this book. I made every one of them."
When Therese Marchitelli's husband died after a car accident in 1995, she had every apparent advantage: years of meditation practice, a Buddhist community, financial footing, and a reputation as the capable one. She was a young widow with two small children, and she was certain she could handle it.
Her strengths became her vulnerabilities.
Here is what almost no one explains to the newly bereaved: grief is not only an emotion. It is a neurological event. The brain reads the sudden loss of your person as mortal danger. Fear runs hot, memory falters, and the machinery of clear judgment goes quiet - at exactly the moment you are asked to make the most irreversible decisions of your life. Sell the house. Move the money. Answer the lawyers. Hold your children together.
And the first mistake, the one that makes all four others possible, is believing you can make those decisions alone.
You are now the CEO of a company you never wanted: Your Life Moving Forward. No CEO governs alone. You need a Board of Trust-eds - named people, defined roles, a written one-year commitment, a real agenda. Marchitelli shows you exactly how to build one: whom to ask, what to put in writing, how to run the meetings, and what to do when someone doesn't hold their seat. A sample commitment contract is included.
Then she tells you about the other four mistakes.
WHAT YOU'LL FIND INSIDE
• Why the grieving brain sabotages decision-making - and the five-second practice that interrupts it
• How to build and run a Board of Trust-eds, with a ready-to-use commitment contract
• Grief-aware guidance on money, children, ritual, intuition, and the relationship that comes after
• A griever's Wheel of Life for rebuilding a life plan when the old one is gone
• Mindfulness practices drawn from a Tibetan Buddhist path begun in 1975 - more than fifty years of practice
WHO THIS IS FOR
The newly widowed. Anyone months or years into bereavement and still getting ambushed. People supporting someone through the loss of a spouse. And readers facing a loss of another kind - a marriage, a career, a self they can't get back. Grief does not check its source.
