"PLEASE can we get a puppy?!"
Sound familiar? If your child has started leaving dog photos on your pillow, promising to give up screen time forever, and perfecting their own puppy-dog eyes in the mirror—this book is for your family.
What to Know Before You Get Your Dog transforms that exciting (and slightly overwhelming) moment into something beautiful: your family's first real conversation about what it means to love and care for a pet-together.
Through gentle rhymes and stunning watercolor illustrations, children discover the daily adventures of dog ownership-from walks and play to feeding, grooming, and yes, even scooping poop. But more than a checklist, this book captures the joy, the bond, and the love that makes it all worthwhile.
WINNER of multiple awards including:
- 2024 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards Gold Medal (Best Nonfiction Series)
- 2022 Indie Reader Discovery Awards (Education)
- 2021 The American Book Fest Awards, Gold Medal (Children's Picture Book)
Perfect for:
- Families considering adoption from a shelter or rescue
- Kids ages 3-8 who are dreaming of their first dog
- Grandparents, aunts, and uncles looking for meaningful gifts
- Teachers and counselors for lessons on empathy and responsibility
BONUS: Includes free downloadable Dog Care Chart and Dog Care Contract to continue the conversation beyond the book!

Praised by the Director of Education at North Shore Animal League America as "one of the most delightful children's books I've ever read, but one of the most important."
