Print on Demand. This book follows an American's adventure in South Africa during the second Boer War. The author, a graduate of West Point, initially relocates to South Africa seeking opportunity in the gold mining industry. With the start of the war in 1899, he joins the Boer forces, ultimately taking command of the Irish Brigade. As the war progresses, the author provides a firsthand account of battles and encounters, revealing the tenacity of the Boer fighters, the role of foreign volunteers, and the harsh realities of combat against a modern military force. The author also reflects on the political machinations that led to war, the brutal treatment of Boer women and children in British concentration camps, and the devastating impact on the Boer republics. By taking the reader from the gold fields to the battlefields, the author provides an invaluable account of a conflict that tested the limits of endurance, perseverance, and the very nature of warfare itself. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Modern Military and War History
ON the fifth day of December, 1894, I sailed on the City of Berlin from New York.
We started in a storm, continued in a storm, and landed in a mud bank off the Isle of Wight, just below the Needles. This caused quite a commotion among the passengers, and all seemed inclined to. Make the last stand at those points of the deck nearest to the life-boats. By reversing the screws, the old death-trap, after a few hours' hard work, succeeded in releasing itself, and we were again on the high sea.
