, Petzoldt, Joseph, 1862-1929. Das Weltproblem von positivistischem Standpunkte aus. Leipzig : B. G. Teubner, 1906, x, 152pp., good small brown cloth, cover cloth wrinkled, rear hinge wobbly, previous owner's name: Peter Boll [or Bolt]. Aus Natur und Geisteswelt, 133. Printed dedication is to Ernst Mach. Walter Dubislav's 1929 obituary noted Petzoldt's importance in continuing the work of Mach and Avenarius, attempting to improve on it with his "Stabilitätsprinzip" as well as his work in education reform and positivist critique of mythical science-thinking. The book on the Weltproblem was still in print for a third edition in 1924. In his review C. H. Rieber wrote: "There is one criticism which the author makes upon every previous system he examines. The disparagement of the world of our immediate experience as a realm of "mere appearance," and the exaltation of a second, purely imaginary world to the rank of reality, this, Dr. Petzoldt contends, is the "miserable mistake" that philosophers have made from the time of the earliest Greek sages to the present day. It is the" original sin" which is responsible for the fall of philosophic man.".…
