Item description from seller

An uncommon edition of an important title, a reprint of a classic work of Christian apology from an esteemed Christian apologist. "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (from the first chapter). The title page continues "VI, 37. shewing the cause, truth and manner of the coming of a sinner to Jesus Christ; with his happy reception, and blessed entertainment, to which is added The One Thing Needful; or, serious meditations on the four last things, Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell." Bound in calf leather over boards in 12mo format, three raised bands, moderate rubbing to tips, edges, chipping to spine, rear panel at/near spine. Still distinct dentelles along edges front and rear. Previous owner's fine inked inscription at first free endpaper, dated to August 17, 1799, being "J. Keddy." Measures 6" x 3 1/2" tall and wide, respectively. Moderately toned of interior, torn final paste-down, else clean and unmarked of interior, easy enough to read. John Bunyan (1628 ? 1688) was an English writer and Puritan preacher who is well known for his writing of the Christian allegory known as The Pilgrim's Progress, but also another 60 titles, allegedly, most of which were also expanded sermons. This title was first published in 1678. Perhaps the locale of publication was not London, but rather, York, which is rendered in smaller font and is italicized. The paper's chain lines are vertical. Philip Gaskell says that "eighteenth-century printers sometimes used half-sheets of double-sized paper, rather than single sheets of ordinary size" and that in books made from these half-sheets "the chain lines appear to run the wrong way," that is, vertically rather than the normal horizontal orientation (A New Introduction to Bibliography, pp. 64-5). Frontis matter, 4-213 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets. …

Store description

Member, I.O.B.A. (the Independent On-line Booksellers Association) "Structure" versus "Agency." A phrase that has characterized much social-scientific debate. Does “structure” (the routinized regulations of kinship and marriage, work and reproduction, of race, class and gender) determine history, or is it the “agency” of fully conscious, independently acting, individuals? Structure, Verses, Agency Books isn’t going to solve the debate, but we’ll offer you lots of all three. Versus to verses—we specialize in fine, rare and collectible books, from the fine arts to the social sciences, from poetry to photography, from literature and ethnography to fine bindings and Americana. Structure, Verses, Agency Books…
