What happens when a child finally finds the word for something they've always felt but never been able to name?
They light up. Every time.
The Weighty Words Book for Kids is a vocabulary book unlike any other — not a dictionary, not a spelling list, not a test. It is a book about the specific pleasure of finding exactly the right word, and what happens to a child's thinking, writing, and confidence when they start to own the words that fit.
64 carefully chosen words. Five chapters. One magnificent A–Z.
Every word in this book was chosen for three reasons: it is genuinely useful, it is genuinely memorable, and it is — many of them — a genuine pleasure to say out loud. Say discombobulate. Say rambunctious. Say kaleidoscopic. There is a reason children love these words. They feel good in the mouth.
Here is how it works:
Each word gets its own short story — usually starring an animal. Mel the melancholy camel. Brant the exuberant puppy. The tenacious little dog who crossed the river on her fourteenth attempt. The stories make the words stick — not as definitions to memorise, but as feelings, scenes, and moments a child can picture and return to.
After every story comes the plain-English meaning, the secret history of the word (which is often stranger than you would expect), three example sentences showing the word in real use, and a Try This prompt — one sentence that turns knowing a word into owning it.
Five chapters. Each one builds something different:
The Big Feelings Words — Ten words for feelings too big, too strange, or too specific to squeeze into happy or sad. Melancholy. Elated. Wistful. Indignant. Words that name what children already feel but have never been able to say.
The Power Words — Nine words that make people stop and pay attention. Tenacious. Audacious. Indomitable. Magnanimous. Words that don't just describe — they command.
The Storyteller's Words — Ten words that the best writers reach for when they want to make something real. Ethereal. Haunting. Resplendent. Evocative. Learn these and your writing will never sound quite the same again.
The Thinking Words — Ten words for ten ways of thinking. Hypothesis. Infer. Synthesize. Articulate. Words that make teachers look up from their marking — because they signal a mind working at full power.
The Weighty A–Z — One magnificent word for every letter of the alphabet. From abscond to zealous — each with a story, a meaning, and a sentence to make it yours.
Plus six appendices built for parents and teachers:
A Master Glossary — all 64 words at a glance
A Greek & Latin Root Map — so children can decode words they've never seen before
A 30-Day Vocabulary Challenge Calendar — designed to be used daily alongside the book
A Grand Weighty Words Challenge — four final challenges to lock everything in
A Parent & Teacher Guide — including a complete 10-week curriculum framework and discussion questions for every chapter
A Word Origins Quick Reference — the etymology of every word in the book, at a glance
This book is for children aged 8–12 — and for every parent, teacher, or librarian who has ever watched a child search for a word they didn't have yet.
The difference between knowing a word and owning a word is one sentence. One real sentence, about something real.
This book gives children 64 of those moments.
The word that fits is always worth finding.
