In a small French town the baker's daughter is brutally raped. She bears a son, Ludo, whose love for his mother is strong and passionate. She, however, has only to look into his piercing green eyes to be reminded of the terrible night of his conception, a memory which haunts their relationship to the end of their days. Ludo's existence with the afflicted heroine and her husband of convenience is strange and troubled, leading him to be sent to an institution for difficult children, over which a warped form of Catholicism presides. All these elements combine to determine the peculiar course of Ludo's life.
About the Author: Yann Queffélec was born in Brittany in 1949 and is a literary critic on Le Nouvel Observateur. His other works include 'Osmose' and 'The Sea'.
