Item description from seller

19 page pamphlet, string bound with some edgewear to pages and a touch of foxing. Daniel Webster references John C. Calhoun's earlier speech and alludes to a "war. carried into Africa," a common phrase at the time, to metaphorically describe the debate's expansion into broad topics. He expresses readiness to discuss various subjects Calhoun might raise, including the tariff and slavery. Webster uses an extended analogy of Roman and Carthaginian history, comparing himself to Hannibal and Calhoun to Scipio Africanus, to emphasize his preparedness for the debate and his intention to engage directly with Calhoun's arguments. He indicates his initial intention was to simply reply to Calhoun, but Calhoun's broad scope of topics necessitates a more extensive response beyond just revenue-related matters.
