Add to basketThis is a bit of a mystery. It contains the full illustrated dictionary in 1538 pages with around 3,000 illustrations which is identical to the 1864 edition of Dr Webster?s Complete Dictionary of the English Language But little else. The first page in the book is the Preface p. iii which ends half way through at p. vi. There follows the Principles of Pronunciation, pp. xli ? lxiii, Orthography pp. lxiv ? lxx, missing the last page lxxi, and then the dictionary pp. 1-1538. Online copies of this edition have appendices taking the pages up to 1759. To make things more complicated the label on the spine describes the book as Webster?s Pronouncing Dictionary. There is no evidence that the missing pages were ever present. Several pages have tears that have been expertly professionally repaired so it?s possible that the book was damaged and the surviving pages rebound. Yet the binding looks contemporary so it?s possible that the book might have originally been bound in this odd way. The main thing is that the dictionary with its thousands of fascinating illustrations is present in its entirety. 8¼ x 11?. Good in red half-leather with 5 raised bands. Corners heavily rubbed with missing leather on front board, gilt lettering on black panel to spine. Firm and tight for such a large heavy book. Some mild foxing to first few pages but otherwise the text is clean with no marks or stains. Several pages professionally repaired. Bookplate on fep. No dustwrapper. 3.7kg. so there will be excess postage payable.
