Paperback. Two lives, four thousand years apart, begin to dream each other awake. In the ancient archive-city of Sarru-on-the-Salt, a water-carrier named Emel is thought simple. What no one believes is that he can lay a hand on a clay tablet or a cracked cup and hear what it truly remembers, which is almost never what the scribes wrote down. Then the Archive gives him a small sealed case to carry, addressed to no one he can find, and he discovers he cannot put it down. Four thousand years later, in a London museum being handed over to the machines, Wren is the last conservator who still works by hand, who still touches things. A newly arrived clay case reaches her bench and brings dreams that are not hers: a salt delta, a slow kind man, a sky raining folded letters. She is the only person alive who can read what Emel carried, because she is dreaming him. They will never meet. That was never what the message needed. A luminous, deadpan, and tender novel about attention as the oldest technology, and about what we lose the moment we force a thing to make sense. For readers of Haruki Murakami, David Mitchell, and Ted Chiang. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.…
