This collection of essays in honor of Prof. Stig Andur Pedersen's 60th Birthday spans over a broad scope of topics, ranging from mathematical modelling over realism in philosophy of science to an analysis of apology after medical mistakes. The unusually broad range is a fair but still inadequate reflection of the work of Stig Andur Pedersen, a philosopher and scientist whose range of interests, abilities and production is itself unusually broad.

Prof. Stig Andur Pedersen did every member of the philosophical community a major service when he launched PHINEWS with his colleague Vincent F. Hendricks. PHINEWS is not a dry newsletter which publishes nothing but announcements and lists of books. Each issue contains a long and detailed paper on a well chosen topic of general interest which sets the stage for conferences, discussions or individual research projects. It plays a significant role as a remedy to the fragmentation of science which Prof. Johan van
Benthem identified as one of the problems to which current scientific organization is confronted. I would like to take the opportunity of Prof.Stig Andur Pedersen sixtieth birthday to thank him for his excellent initiative.
