Print on Demand. This book is a thorough examination of water supply engineering and the scientific principles it is based on, from quality to quantity, for both public and private use. The author provides an insightful look at traditional methods and marries it to practical guidance, giving readers a resource they can use throughout their career. This book not only provides essential information on selecting a source, determining quantity and demand, and storing water but also looks at subjects that have become increasingly relevant such as the purification of water, the flow of it through pipes, and even the distribution systems used to get clean water to the end-user. Whether the reader is a student, an engineer, or just someone with a passion for how water is handled, this book provides a wealth of information in a compact and well-written format. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- General Engineering
IN view of the many excellent treatises on Waterworks Engineering already in existence, it may appear that there is little opening for another work on the same subject. In the Opinion of the writer and the publishers of this book, however, there is still need for a small work, more particularly suitable, perhaps, for engineering students, setting forth in a compact manner the general scientific principles on which the subject is based, and serving as an introduction to the larger, more technical, and more highly priced treatises.
It is in the hope of supplying such a need that the book makes its appearance.
Special prominence has therefore been given to such questions as the quality of the water, the interpretation of analyses, the stability of masonry dams, the flow of water through the pipes, and the general application of mathematics to the subject, etc.
At the same time, it has been the aim of the writer to bear well in mind the fact that theory is useless without practical knowledge to supplement it. Many 'rules of thumb' and practical hints, as well as descriptions of existing works, are given, based either on the writer's own experience or on that of others, and it is hoped that the young engineer will find the book useful as an introduction either to his practical work or to his study of more comprehensive books.
