About this Item
[24] pp., small folio (13 x 8.5 in.), full parchment over flexible boards, gilt spine title. Printed by the Grabhorn Press in red, blue and black on Van Gelder paper, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. No. 14 of 125 copies printed for Herbert Lionel Rothschild (1881-1935) (plus 50 copies for sale). Rothschild was a lawyer and builder of San Francisco's first silent movie theaters in the 1920s. Heller and Magee notes two variants of the copies printed for Rothschild: some in parchment-backed blue boards, and some in full parchment - this copy is one of the latter versions. Housed in a custom burgundy cloth clamshell box with leather spine label. With the bookplate of James Strohn Copley (1916-1973), the journalist, newspaperman, and publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune, on the front pastedown (his sale, Sotheby's, June 17, 2010, lot 235). An early and rather scarce production by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn. A fine, well-preserved copy, the parchment covers remarkably clean and bright (with only minor soiling), small area of offsetting onto front blank. Heller and Magee 43. Seller Inventory # 4701
