What is life as a Prison Officer really like?

Most people only see prisons through headlines, documentaries and television dramas. The reality is very different — and if you're thinking about becoming a Prison Officer, you deserve a straight answer before you commit.

So You Want to Be a Prison Officer? is a practical, honest guide to becoming and being a Prison Officer in the UK. It explains what the job actually involves, how to get into it, and what no recruitment brochure will tell you. This is not a memoir or a collection of war stories — it's the orientation a new recruit wishes someone had given them before their first day.

Written by a former Prison Officer with experience across Category A, B, C and D prisons, Young Offender Institutions, the women's estate, specialist search teams and prison dog handling units, it offers a balanced, realistic look at one of the most challenging careers in the public sector.

Inside you'll discover:

How to become a Prison Officer, and what the recruitment process really involves. What training prepares you for — and what it doesn't. The reality of daily life on a prison wing. The different types of prisons, and the prisoners you'll encounter. Why teamwork, communication and professional boundaries matter so much. The challenges of violence, self-harm, drugs and corruption. The mental toll of the job, and how officers cope with it. Career progression, specialist roles and life beyond the landing

The book also includes a quick-reference guide of essential tips for new officers and a glossary of key prison terms to help you find your feet fast.

Whether you're considering applying to the Prison Service, preparing to start training, supporting someone who works behind the gate, or simply curious about what really happens inside Britain's prisons, this book gives you the honest insight you've been looking for.
