Ping Lian Yeak was born in Malaysia in 1993 and is now living in Australia. At the age of three, came the seemingly defeating diagnosis of autism. As a toddler Ping Lian was nonverbal, hyperactive with attention deficit disorder, living in “his own world”, not showing any affection or awareness of danger and unable to hold a pencil to write or use a scissor to cut.
I Want To Be Artist: An Autistic Savant’s Voice and A Mother’s Dream Transformed onto Canvas is a non-fictional account of the inspirational journey of a young boy in special education with severe autism, who has been empowered by his single, widowed mother (Sarah Lee) to become a successful artist and a well behaved young man who exhibits empathy and affection. It is the story of a mother’s desperate struggle to get her autistic son to “see” her; to “love” his family, to be a contributing member to society, and to live a meaningful life.
Sarah Lee "brainwashed" her autistic son (acknowledged as a prodigious savant by Dr. Darold Treffert), to become an artist by using the knowledge she gained in motivational seminars and her faith in God, paired with her intuitive insights. The book showcases the power of when you dare to dream and how determination can change a situation that appears Impossible, to become Possible.
The portrayal is one mother’s triumphant message for developing a skill, training a talent, developing good character and instilling emotion in her autistic son.

About the Author
Dr. Rosa C. Martinez Dr. Martinez has a B.S. in Special Education from CCNY, a Masters degree in Adolescent Autism, a Masters of Philosophy, and a Doctorate in Behavioral Disorders from Columbia University. She is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst currently working for the NYS Department of Education. Dr. Martinez is the President and Founder of Strokes of Genius, Inc. After meeting Ping Lian Yeak in 2006, Dr. Rosa C. Martinez created her vision for Strokes of Genius, Inc. She soon became a collaborator with Sarah SH Lee and began promoting Ping Lian Yeak's artworks here in the United States. She organizes art exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally featuring the artworks of savants and individuals on the autism spectrum. She has curated art shows at the The United Nations, Carnegie Hall, Cooper Union, The Michael Schimmel Arts Center and the prestigious Salmagundi Historical Art Club. Dr. Martinez has taught Education courses at Hunter College, the College of Staten Island, Long Island University, Touro College and the University of Maryland and also teaches literacy and communication skills to behaviorally challenged adolescents with autism and other developmental disabilities. She was instrumental in establishing various ABA programs for young children with PDD and Autism in New York City and has been working with individuals on the autism spectrum ranging from infants to adult populations for more than 30 years. We are pleased to receive orders via the Abebooks shopping basket. VISITS: PRIOR NOTICE is needed if you would like to PICK UP a book from our shop. Our listed books are not on the public access shelves, though duplicates might be. You could use Ask Bookseller a Question, beneath the book description, and type something like: Can I pick up this book at the weekend. This minimizes the keyboard work you need to do. Or communicate with us in any other way. Much of our stock will probably never be listed, as our shop is about the size of two tennis courts, so a visit can be rewarding. There are many good cheap cafes in Newtown, an emerging tourist area, close to the Sydney CBD, and many customers make a night of it.

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Goulds Book Arcade, Sydney, Newtown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, +61 2-9519-8947, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
Orders usually ship within 3 business days, unless Express or Courier services are requested. For overweight books, we will seldom apply for extra postage (even though we may warn of this in the description) as we have recently got a low contract postage rate through the Australian Booksellers¿ Association.
