Theodor Fontane is the great poet of ancient Prussia - and he was at the same time a deeply modern character. Hans-Dieter Rutsch rediscovers this fontane. He tells his life and explores his world, his places in its historical dimension as in their present. In Neuruppin, Fontane's childhood city, there is still the pharmacy that the father lost through play debts. Even the son became a pharmacist, began to write and became political. In the revolution of 1848, Fontane fought on the Berlin barricades, and at thirty he decided to live a life as a freelance writer. His paths led him as a war rapporteur to Paris, where he was arrested as a spy, to London, where he saw the night sides of industrialisation; but there is also the longing land of Silesia; and again Brandenburg, where the novelist studied the human. For Fontane, these travels were literary-journalistic commission; his family he often left behind in precarious conditions.
This book discovers a clairvoyant, novel poet who restlessly described early modern Germany and in it also our present, who already then longed for deceleration, simplicity - a double fontane that is our contemporary.
