In parallel with Western Modernism in architecture and design, an Eastern modern existed. Walter Scheiffele shows the interplay between the two using the example of furniture construction, which has had a centre in the German workshops Hellerau since Werkbundzeiten. From Mart Stam, Selman Selmanagic, Franz Ehrlich and others, impulses ranged from furniture design to urban design. The furniture programs of Selmanagic and Ehrlich were realized by the German workshops as the soon leading furniture manufacturer in the GDR. In West Germany, they found parallels in the M 125 type furniture range by Hans Gugelot and in the INwand system by Herbert Hirche. In Hellerau, Rudolf Horn led furniture design to a new climax at the same time with his MDW mounting furniture system. Thirty years after the reunion, it is time to reflect on one, albeit contradictory, unity of Eastern and Western modernism.
