Hard cover, 12mo, bound in black leather-covered (flexible) boards with double rules of red horizontally across the boards and spine, between which is a ruled image of columned Roman ruins blocked in gold to the front, with titles to the spine. All edges of text block stained red, with glazed black end papers. In English. Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co., Edinburgh and London. Vol. I: 348 pp. Vol. II: 350 pp. plus 10 pp. publisher's advertising.**CONDITION: Very Good Plus. Boards generally clean, with a few small spots of wear or soiling, seen in the right light only. Minor wear seen at outer joint Vol. II and tips. Vol II has a manufacturing issue (?) at head of spine extending to 1/8 inch into text block in one place, and also a split inner front hinge. ( The former mark might have been stuck into with a pencil or another point.) Not written in. Still, these are serviceable and useful guides even to today's visitor to the Eternal City. CONTENTS include an unusually literary Introduction by the Author, quoting the Ancients as well as more modern authors, on the emotional impact of arrival to this great city, arguing the case for a travel guide to unwind the overwhelming detail of how to navigate its many cultural riches. Hence, chapters are divided into various day-trip walks to the museums, galleries and historic sites, as well as an index reference to each of the two volumes of famous Romans mentioned in the text. A 2-page map of the historic center of Rome appears at the start of each volume. **English travel book innovator AUTHOR Augustus J.C. Hare (1834-1903) wrote a number of popular travel books, many of Italian origin, during a varied career as an Author and successful artist. He came from a family of writers and artists. Born in Rome, although educated in England, first near the ancestral family seat in Herstmonceux, East Sussex and later at Oxford. A classic work to enhance the enjoyment of a visit before, during or after your travels.
