Everyone in Marble Hill has a theory about what happened to Sam Renfro. Her twin sister came home to find out which of them is lying. Anna Renfro got out of Marble Hill, Georgia-Meth Hill, if you were being honest-and went to college in Athens. Her twin sister Sam stayed. Then Sam walks out of the Yellow Creek Bar with a stranger in a black cowboy hat and doesn't come back. Anna drops everything and drives north into the hollows. Her mother is drunk on the couch. Her uncle Brokeback, who cooks meth in a storm shelter and answers to no one, is looking for Sam his own way. The sheriff has a theory involving cartels. The pastor's wife has a casserole, and questions she stops herself from asking. When Sam's dress turns up on a trail in the Wildlife Management Area, Anna learns that the sister she thought she knew had a whole life she never asked about. And that in this county, the law is one thing and justice is something older. This is a book about the people we leave behind, and what they owe each other when the law can't settle the bill.…

Her mother, Jenny, copes by getting drunk and using dope, while her meth cooking and dealing Uncle Brokeback uses violence and intimidation to look for Sam on his own. At first, everyone suspects that Sam has simply run away, but Anna’s twin intuition knows better. While investigating the many clues regarding Sam’s whereabouts, Anna comes into contact with a host of characters who both help and hinder her search.
When the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Sheriff’s department discover devastating proof that something horrible happened to her sister, Anna must face the chilling truth that there is much about her twin sister that she doesn’t know. As the novel progresses, Anna finds that nothing is what it seems in her small, bucolic home town: beneath the surface, Marble Hill is full of dark secrets where everyone is a suspect. Anna ultimately learns that she cannot trust anyone—not even herself.
