The hardest thing about writing this book was coming up with a good title, especially when someone informed me that my first choice, "Cold Mountain," had already been taken by some upstart. Then I thought maybe I'd go with "Soup for the Soul Chicken," but a close friend advised against it. "Sounds like a book co-written by Martha Stewart and James Brown," he remarked. Well, nobody wants that. Finally, we settled on "Waking Up in a Cornfield," because it's kind of pastoral and evocative, even nostalgic. I mean, who HASN'T woken up in a cornfield? In all seriousness, I truly believe that most anyone who reads this book will find something in it to enjoy. These essays are certainly bite-sized morsels, but they are chewy and last for a long time. Some are sweet, some are sour, but most all of them are pretty yummy, I hope. Bon Appetit!
