About the book >.>.> Wagner: A Documentary Study offers an in-depth exploration of the life and works of composer Richard Wagner, focusing on his visionary approach to music and dramatic art. This comprehensive study delves into Wagner's significant relationship with the Flying Dutchman legend, which played a pivotal role in the development of his grand concepts, particularly realised during the first Bayreuth Festival in 1876. The book reveals Wagner's artistry through previously unpublished materials, including contemporary illustrations and documents that illuminate his creative processes and the reactions of his contemporaries. The authors, Herbert Barth, Egon Voss, and Dietrich Mack, provide rich context to Wagner's experiences, detailing his tumultuous career from his early days as a conductor in provincial theatres to his roles in political upheaval, such as the Dresden uprising of 1849, which led to his exile. The text also reflects on Wagner's complex personal relationships, notably his marriage to actress Minna Planer and his affairs with Mathilde Wesendonck and Cosima von Bülow, the latter eventually becoming his second wife. The portrayal of Wagner demonstrates how his magnetic personality aroused both devotion and disdain, ensuring his status as a controversial figure in music history. This documentary study also integrates Wagner's writings on music, society, and politics, alongside responses from family, friends, critics, and officials, facilitating a multifaceted understanding of his life and artistic legacy. With scholarly insights and a wealth of primary source material, Wagner: A Documentary Study serves as an essential resource for those interested in the intricate interplay between the man and his monumental contributions to operatic literature.
