About this Item
This incredible archive of World War II material was accumulated by Lt. G.H. Logan, a navigator aboard B-17s and B-24s of the 302nd Transport Wing of the 27th Air Transport Group. The bulk of the collection includes approximately 90 navigational charts that intimately reflect Logan's training in the United States, deployment overseas, and wartime operations across the European Theater of Operations. Originating from a mix of RAF and AAF sources, they are filled with manuscript annotations showing directions of approach, call signs, radio frequencies, etc. Several feature rubberstamps such as Confidential, RESTRICTED, and Return to A.T.C. Brief Casablanca. Areas covered include England & Wales, Ireland (strictly off limits), the Scottish Highlands, Gibraltar, San Antonio, Orlando, Balearic Islands, Austin, Dallas, Straits of Dover, Shreveport, Jacksonville, Birmingham, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Chattanooga, Nashville, New Orleans, Rome, Naples, Corsica, Sicily, Sardinia, Florence, Leipzig, Vienna, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, Strasbourg, Frankfort, Munich, Marseille, Lyon, Brest, Nice, and Bordeaux. In addition to the large lot of navigational charts, the archive includes numerous other artifacts and pieces of ephemera that characteristically reflect the WWII experiences of an American pilot. Dead reckoning analog computers, reference books and cards, aerial calculators, and flight forecast sheets all show the careful planning and constant adjustments made during flight. An interesting set of printed orders instructs pilots not to deviate from assigned routes, even when ordered by a superior officer. A small collection (about 10) of field diagrams offers convenient guides to English airfields; while a bound Radio Facilities Chart of the ETO (marked CONFIDENTIAL) features several printed and manuscript updates. Other notable inclusions in the collection are two well-used Navigator logs that chronicle Logan's flights between the fall of 1944 and the summer of 1945. Several flight plans highlight extensive operations across Europe. Other articles are more personal and include souvenirs, worn editions of Stars & Stripes, pin-up girls, extra forms, etc. Also of interest is a leather Log Book cover inscribed by Lt. F.G. Lake. While the authenticity of the signature cannot be verified, Lake became an aviation hero when he successfully sank a U-boat with his PBY Catalina off the coast of Brest in 1945.
