[WWII] [Latino] Puerto Rico World War II photo archive, documenting a blend of military activity and island life during a pivotal moment in global and Caribbean history. Archive of 9 silver gelatin photographs measuring between 5.25" x 3.75" to 3.25" x 2". The images include American soldiers posed casually and in uniform, a group portrait inside a military structure, a troupe of armed Puerto Rican soldiers marching, and relaxed moments such as a serviceman reclining on a sandy beach or posed with natives. The presence of U.S. troops reflects Puerto Rico's strategic importance as a military base during the war, serving as a key location for training and coastal defense in the Caribbean theater. Rural life is also depicted: one striking photo shows a line of Puerto Rican soldiers flanked by palm trees, while another features local thatched-roof home with a native man and children posed with an American soldier. A few photos capture urban scenes of Puerto Rican streets and notable architecture, highlighting the island's unique blend of Spanish colonial heritage and American territorial administration. The group photo seems to be taken at a Christmas party that includes many servicemen in uniform, including an Asian American serviceman, as well as some women in formal attire with beverages laid about. Penned en recto: "Christmas very far away from home." One photo shows a Navy serviceman in uniform and cap walking towards the camera on a Naval base showcasing military structures behind him. These contrast the modernity of the military presence with the continuity of traditional island life. During World War II, Puerto Rico played a critical role in the U.S. military's defense network, especially with the establishment of bases such as Fort Brooke, Camp Tortuguero, and the expansion of Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. Thousands of American and Puerto Rican soldiers trained and deployed from the island. Puerto Rican civilians, meanwhile, navigated the complexities of life under increased U.S. military activity, with the island functioning both as a garrison and a homefront. Together, these photographs offer a glimpse into the lesser-documented Caribbean aspect of World War II. Whether posed or candid, these moments preserve a fleeting intersection of global conflict and local identity. Photos slightly curled, most are is stamped en verso that it was passed by the US Army Examanir and lists the bases of 0126, 0118, 0117, and 0124. Two include penned 1944 dates en recto. Overall very good condition.
