Add to basketThis is a curious but interesting carved block of wood, dating from WW1, measuring 16 x 20 x 1 cm and hand carved on one side "Royal Engineers" with their insignia (image 1). On the reverse (image 2): we can read: "A bit of "Spare Time". Wal. 8.8.18. Then "Bea."" then illegible (image 2). ['Trench art' is a term used to describe objects made from the debris and by-products of modern warfare. Trench Art is usually associated with the First World War, as here, although similar items have been produced in other conflicts too. Most trench art was made by servicemen to pass the time when not in the front line].
