Full title - THE WORKS OF THOMAS DICK, LL.D. FOUR VOLUMES IN ONE. VIZ. AS ESSAY ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF SOCIETY: THE PHILOSOPHY OF A FUTURE STATE: THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION: THE CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHER: OR, THE CONNEXION OF SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY WITH RELIGION. Paged as [2], i-x, 11-191, [1], i-x, 11-127, [1], [4], vii-x, 11-186, i-x, 9-162. Hardcover: H 22.5cm x L 14cm. Contemporary cloth stained and rubbed; board edges worn particularly at corners; tearing along joints causing spine cloth at center to lift away from underlying back-strip; shallow wear to spine heel with head frayed; spine's gilt stamping flaked/rubbed but still legible. Text block edges toned/stained. Old pencil and ink writing on endpapers; two-line pencil inscription "G.H. Young | Columbus" on front free endpaper; notes on rear pastedown for one Hollis Banks. Double-column text. Foxing/toning prevalent throughout with stains and soiling. Several quires/leaves pulled with additional lesser stress points but binding is holding. Now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which enhances the book's shelf presence. General title leaf for the entire volume but each of the four separately paged books have their own title leaf all sharing the same Hartford/New York 1836 imprint. *** {Book #1} ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF SOCIETY BY THE DIFFUSION OF KNOWLEDGE: AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE ADVANTAGES WHICH WOULD RESULT FROM A MORE GENERAL DISSEMINATION OF RATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION AMONG ALL RANKS. ILLUSTRATED WITH ENGRAVINGS. *** {Book #2} THE PHILOSOPHY OF A FUTURE STATE. *** {Book #3} THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION; OR, AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE MORAL LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE. *** {Book #4} THE CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHER, OR, THE CONNEXION OF SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY WITH RELIGION. *** Features the standard essays of Scottish minister and philosopher Thomas Dick (1774-1857). The aforementioned pencil inscription G.H. Young should be that of Colonel George Hampton Young (1799-1880) who was among the wealthiest of planters in north Mississippi and started construction in 1838 of Waverley Plantation (completed circa 1852) located midway between West Point and Columbus. The Hollis Banks connection is uncertain but Colonel Young's last child Lucy Watkins Young (1841-1933) married James Oliver Banks Sr. in 1870. None of their children had the name Hollis but presumably there is a family connection. {Antiquarian-Shelf#2|CVA-01357}. Seller Inventory # CVA-01357
