Plates engraved by F. Hayman, L.O. Boitard, and Samuel Wale after designs by Charles Guignion The Senior (1721-1810) Contemporary full tan calf with double labels in green and red morocco titled in gilt; panelled spines with floral gilt decoration. Head and tail and edges of the spines lightly rubbed, as are the edges of the boards. Marginal toning to prelims front and back. A very good copy indeed of Young. In the 'Advertisement' in the first volume Young states with the meekest of spirits, "I think the following piece in four volumes to be the most excusable of all that I have formerly written; and I with less apology was needful for these". First published in 1742, "the poem [Night-Thoughts] was admired by Diderot, Robespierre (who 'kept it under his pillow' during the Revolution), and by Madame de Stael. Young was sharply criticised by Chateaubriand but was still read by Lamartine and the French 'romantics'" [DNB, v.XXI p 1287]. Seller Inventory # 15066
