About this Item
Two handwritten letters and 10 small black and white photos. Two letters, one each from Missionaries Alice Wishart and Lucy Powel. Both letters are addressed to Mrs. J.E. Shoemaker of Philadelphia. The letters talk of their work in India and the financial strain on the missionaries and the Indian staff. Both the letters and the photos are from the Indian city Allahabad, officially known as Prayagraj - a metropolis in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Women's Missionary auxiliaries, like temperance groups and women's clubs, appealed to middle-class Victorian era and early 20th century women as an opportunity for a vicarious (or real) experience that was both pious and adventurous. All letters have handwritten descriptions on the verso. Seller Inventory # 3383
