FIRST EDITION 1875, 8vo, original publisher's green cloth, gilt lettering, small gilt anchor device 'Anchora Spei', plus 2 decorative black bands to upper cover, blind bands to lower cover, spine gilt lettered and banded, same anchor device at tail, brown endpapers, pages: (4), 222. Book leaning just slightly, head and tail of spine and corners slightly worn, 2 tiny nicks to cloth at tail of spine, another to top of lower hinge, pale stain to lower corner of upper cover with faint brown tide-mark, small water stain to lower cover next to spine, 1 or 2 other minor marks, endpapers slightly faded at edges, a pencil line on each, inner paper hinges partly cracked, binding firm, inscribed by the publishers to a Mrs Hamilton on the half-title, a little pale ink on bottom edges, just showing very slightly on the lower margin edge of a few pages, otherwise contents clean. A good plus copy of the scarce first edition in book form. Despite the title this is a fairy story for children first serialised in Good Things December 5th 1874 to July 3rd under the title A Double Story. It was reprinted several times with various titles, including in London in 1895 as The Lost Princess. Shaberman, George MacDonald, page 55, No. 54.
