'The action was one of Trespass on the Case, in the nature of an Indebitatus Assumpsit, and brought by me, as one of the Paymasters of Exchequer Bills, against the Defendant, for the recovery of a portion of my salary and emoluments which had been illegally received by him.' A lengthy account of an action brought by the litigious William Carmichael Smyth, yet another dispute arising from his employment as a paymaster of Exchequer bills from 1811 to 1824 when he was removed from office by what he claims was conspiracy. He also sought redress at the Court of the King's Bench in 1835 because payment of the arrears of his pension from 1826 had been denied him by the Treasury. Smyth wrote another pamphlet concerning his experiences in the ecclesiastical courts where he was 'harassed with a groundless, vexatious and iniquitous suit, in the Consistory Court of London, and in the Arches Court of Canterbury.'
