Special Agent Sloane Aris is a ghost within the FBI. Cursed with Affective Empathy Disorder, a biological condition that forces her to violently absorb the extreme emotions and physical panic of others, she survives by isolating herself in the sensory-deprived, 61-degree chill of Quantico's Room 4B. Three years ago, her paralyzing empathy led to a catastrophic failure during the Brighton Bank siege, leaving twelve innocent people dead and her tactical squad disgraced and erased.
When a faceless hijacker breaches a subterranean bunker and takes the surviving operatives of her old team hostage, Sloane is forced back into the line of fire. But this is no ordinary hostage situation; the mastermind has painstakingly constructed a 1:1 scale replica of the Brighton Bank, engineering a bespoke psychological labyrinth designed specifically to break her.
As Sloane is dragged deeper into a lethal game of manipulation, she discovers the architect of her nightmare is Maya—her identical twin sister and a brilliant, sociopathic psychiatrist who orchestrated the original Brighton bombing. Aided by Sloane's own disgraced mentor, Maya plans to expose the FBI's entire covert intelligence roster to the dark web and frame Sloane as the ultimate terrorist. Bleeding, betrayed, and pushed to the absolute limits of human endurance, Sloane must weaponize her empathy to outsmart a predator who feels absolutely nothing.
What to Expect in Where the Cold Takes Hold:A Flawed, Unforgettable Heroine: Follow Sloane Aris, a brilliant negotiator whose radical hyper-empathy serves as both a crippling curse and her ultimate weapon.
Chilling Psychological Warfare: Dive into a harrowing battle of wits between identical twins—one burdened with feeling too much, the other empowered by feeling absolutely nothing.
Ingenious Death Traps: Navigate flawless, multi-million-dollar architectural replicas built as terrifying execution chambers and psychological tests.
Devastating Betrayals: Uncover the dark conspiracies buried within the FBI and a legendary mentor's shocking descent into madness.
Welcome to the maze. Keep your heart open, because the temperature is dropping.
